They improbably defended their Turin title; Georgia wins womens
Armenia, the tiny former Soviet republic, repeated as Chess Olympiad gold medalists. Led by GM Levon Aronian, they scored 19 points as the only team that won nine matches. Two players - GMs Vladimir Akopian and Gabriel Sargissian - finished with performance ratings over 2800. Israel finished second.
Perennial powerhouse Georgia broke China's hegemony of the women's division by defeating Serbia 3-1 today for first place. They finished tied with Ukraine but they win on tiebreaks. Top board GM Maia Chiburdanidze performed over 2700 and she will also win an individual bronze.
The U.S. teams both won today and both will take bronze, with the men sneaking in after routing previously unbeaten Ukraine, 3-5-0.5.
